DESIGN PROJECT:

  • Parti
  • Master Plan
  • Structure
  • Application

The parti diagram guides the fundamental organization of the buildings on the site.

Considerations such as solar direction and prevailing winds, as well as the existing condition and the functions of each building typology, determine how the parti is organized.

The various functions of the school should be closely arranged around a central chapel to reinforce the importance of faith in all aspects of daily life. The parti should be as compact as possible to maximize agricultural opportunities and reinforce the human scale.

The master plan evolves from the application of the faith centered parti to the existing site. The educational, administrative, and residential components are grouped around the central chapel.

The new buildings should blend logically with the existing library and dormitory and respect the landscape and character of the surrounding area.

The buildings should be oriented along the east-west axis to minimize solar gain. This alignment also favors the prevailing north-south breezes.

A unified structural system incorporates the regional construction methods using locally manufactured, renewable building materials. This system is then applied to each individual building typology.

The typical wall structure will involve a double layer of locally manufactured clay bricks with reinforced corners and a lime wash finish. The roof structure and covered porches will involve a bamboo truss system supporting fibrous cement panels.

The structural system can be applied to a variety of typologies in a variety of different ways to create a hierarchy among the different building functions.

Working with single story and single occupancy units, the character of the buildings will derive from the different applications of the bamboo truss and wall openings.

Bamboo screens, sculpted masonry openings, and clerestory spaces can bring a level of elegance to relatively simple buildings and materials.
